Project Brief:Freddy Clarke’s earliest memory is of being taken from a pram pushed by his mother in Nicholson St, Fitzroy. That memory of being taken – crying, confused, aged 18 months – along with his three year old brother Joe, while his mother ran after the big black car, is still painfully clear. The two brothers were first placed in the Alexandra Babies Home, and then in separate wings of the Ballarat Orphanage.

This is a tragic story of a boy who who did not see his parents ever again, who was fostered into an abusive family, who chanced upon his youngest brother Harry 37 years later, and who has spent a lifetime trying to reconnect with extended family and culture. ‘There were no family visits. We never got letters, there was no contact. We never learnt nothing about being Aboriginal.’
